Why Am I Sweating So Much During Pregnancy?

What makes pregnant women sweat more?

During pregnancy, blood flow can increase by up to 50%. This causes blood vessels to dilate, which brings blood closer to the surface of the skin, causing you to feel hot. You’re also exerting extra energy as your baby bump grows!

With changes to hormones come changes to the body. Sweating is one of the results of pregnancy hormones. This is natural, though consult your doctor if you experience fever or a high body temperature.

How can I manage excessive sweating?

Unfortunately, there is no ‘cure’ for sweating. The good news is this is temporary – as your hormones begin to regulate again post-partum, your perspiration should return to normal. Generally, you’ll experience this relief around the time of your first ovulation after giving birth.

Some ways to minimise discomfort include:

  • Frequent showers or baths in cool to warm water (not hot)
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing
  • Wear natural, breathable fibres like cotton
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Carry a water bottle with you and make sure to keep up your fluids.
  • If you find yourself sweating overnight, try sleeping on a towel to help protect your sheets. Sleep with a window open if you can.
  • Fill a spray bottle with water and spritz yourself as often as you please.
  • Enjoy a foot soak in a bowl of cold water.
