What to expect

What’s happening to my baby?

Your baby will now measure around 2.5cm in length, about the size of a small strawberry, and now has clearly visible fingers and toes. By this stage, it has developed its internal sex organs, although these won’t be discernible with an ultrasound.

The heart is now mature and is pumping away almost three times as fast as yours. Ears can be clearly visible on the side of the head, and even tiny teeth buds are forming, which will become the first set of baby teeth in future years.

As your baby’s face develops, its head takes on less of a dominant appearance in proportion to the rest of the body. Your baby also has a rapidly developing brain that is now active.

What’s happening to me?

Your midwife or doctor might discuss the possibility of non-invasive tests, which can detect certain chromosomal abnormalities.

Varicose and spider veins might begin to appear as blood flow around your body increases to accommodate your baby’s needs. If you or your family have a history of heart problems, you should consult your doctor because these can be exacerbated by the increasing volume of blood being pumped around your body. This can also lead to feelings of being flushed or over-heated, so monitor your body’s sensations closely.
